How to clear up gray areas in your division of labor
Inefficiency within a company is often due to the lack of a centralized resource for managing tasks.
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) platforms provide this framework to improve communication, reporting and management of key needs. However, you may find that in addition to an ERP system, your business also requires a hard look at the delegation of responsibilities. Before, during and directly following ERP deployment is the perfect time to take stock of the functions within your organization, and where they fall. Here are some ways to review the division of labor within your workforce:
- Look for gray areas. Responsibilities that are collaborative sometimes cause the most trouble for assignments. If those tasks require input from various areas of the company (human resources, operations, finance) then set up a regular check-in and sub-delegate jobs under the larger task at hand. Decide who is accountable for bringing certain pieces of the collaboration to the table.
- Delegate by department. Sometimes, matters like telecom expense management can fall between the cracks. Is it your finance team's responsibility, or should it fall under your tech team?
- Delegate by role. Determining which department handles in-between tasks can be simple. However, assigning them within a department requires careful planning. Annually, it's a good idea to review role descriptions so that employees are made aware of what's on their plate. When creating a new position, thoroughly examine the tasks to fall within its domain.
